Water Heater Warning Signs: When to Call a Professional

Plumber inspecting a home water heater

Most water heaters sit out of sight until the hot water runs out. Catching the early warning signs gives you time to plan a repair or replacement on your schedule, instead of facing an emergency after a failure.

The warning signs

ENERGY STAR lists these common red flags:

  • Age. If your water heater is more than 10 years old, it is time to have it assessed before you are left with an emergency decision.
  • Visible corrosion. Corrosion around the water lines or on the unit itself signals deterioration.
  • Leaking. Moisture around any joints, seals or seams means the closed system is breaking down. Leaks can get worse and damage the surrounding area.
  • Rust in your water. Rusty hot water usually means the interior of the tank is corroding.
  • Less hot water. Sediment buildup inside the tank reduces capacity over time.
  • Rumbling or unusual noises. Noises often point to sediment buildup and a unit straining to operate.

What these signs mean

One warning sign is not a diagnosis, and none of these means your water heater will fail tomorrow. They are reasons to have the unit assessed by a professional while you still have options. Ignoring them can lead to sudden failure: no hot water, possible tank rupture, and water damage to floors and belongings. An emergency replacement also tends to cost more and limits your choices.

Simple maintenance that helps

The EPA’s WaterSense program recommends a few habits: visually inspect the unit for leaks, aged gaskets and corrosion; flush the tank once a year to reduce sediment; and check the temperature and pressure relief valve annually. Follow your water heater manufacturer’s instructions for any of these tasks, and skip anything you are not comfortable doing safely. If you prefer not to do this yourself, a professional can service the water heater once a year.
