Fire Safety Essentials
Smoke Detectors
- Install on every level and in each bedroom
- Test monthly using the test button
- Replace batteries annually
- Replace entire units every 10 years
- Never disable detectors, even temporarily
Fire Extinguishers
Keep multipurpose (ABC) extinguishers in kitchen, garage, and each level. Check pressure gauge monthly. Learn the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.
Carbon Monoxide Protection
Install CO detectors on each level, especially near bedrooms. Test monthly and replace batteries as needed. Replace units every 5-7 years. Never ignore CO alarms—evacuate immediately and call 911.
Electrical Safety
- Test GFCI outlets monthly
- Don’t overload circuits or outlets
- Replace frayed cords immediately
- Keep electrical devices away from water
- Have electrical panel inspected every 5 years
- Install arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs)
Fall Prevention
- Install handrails on all staircases
- Secure rugs with non-slip pads
- Improve lighting in hallways and stairs
- Keep walkways clear of clutter
- Install grab bars in bathrooms
Emergency Preparedness
Create a family emergency plan, establish meeting points, and maintain emergency supply kits with water, food, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents.
Annual Home Safety Audit
Walk through your home annually checking all safety systems, updating emergency supplies, reviewing escape plans with family, and addressing any new safety concerns.
